Safety First: 10 Essential RV Safety Checks Every Owner Should Perform

Safety First: 10 Essential RV Safety Checks Every Owner Should Perform

Embarking on an RV adventure is exhilarating, but safety should always be the top priority. Before hitting the open road, RV owners must perform routine safety checks to ensure a secure journey for themselves and their fellow travelers. Here are ten essential RV safety checks every owner should incorporate into their pre-trip routine:

Tire Inspection

Begin with a thorough check of your RV’s tires. Inspect for signs of wear, proper inflation, and any visible damage. Don’t forget the spare tire—it should also be in good condition.

Brake System Check

Ensure your RV’s brakes are functioning correctly. Test the brakes, check brake fluid levels, and inspect brake pads and rotors for wear.

Lights and Signals

Confirm that all exterior lights and signals are operational. This includes headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights. Replace any burnt-out bulbs.

Fire Extinguisher Test

Confirm the functionality of your RV’s fire extinguisher. Ensure it is easily accessible and that everyone on board knows its location.

Propane System Inspection

Examine the propane system for leaks, ensuring all connections are secure. Test propane-operated appliances and detectors to guarantee they are in working order.

Emergency Exit Checks

Test all emergency exits, including windows and doors, to ensure they open smoothly. In case of an emergency, easy access to exits is crucial.

RV Weight Distribution

Maintain proper weight distribution to enhance stability and control while driving. Check the load balance and make adjustments if necessary.

LP Gas Leak Test

Conduct a propane leak test using a soapy water solution on all connections. Bubbles indicate leaks that should be addressed promptly.

Fluid Levels

Check and top off all essential fluids, including oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and windshield washer fluid.

Battery Health

Check the RV’s battery for corrosion, secure connections, and proper fluid levels. Test the battery’s charge to avoid unexpected power issues on the road.

Bake the cookies until golden brown and gooey. Combining the classic s’mores flavors with the buttery cookie base will leave you wanting s’more!

Peppermint Hot Chocolate Cookies

This recipe combines two-holiday favorites – peppermint and hot chocolate. Crush some candy canes and mix them into your favorite chocolate cookie dough. Bake the cookies until they are soft and chewy. Once cooled, drizzle them with melted white chocolate and sprinkle crushed candy canes on top. These cookies are like a warm cup of peppermint hot chocolate in every bite.

Gingerbread Campfire Cookies

gingerbread

What’s Christmas without gingerbread? Make a batch of gingerbread cookie dough and shape them into small logs. Wrap each log in aluminum foil and place them in the campfire or fire pit. Allow them to cook for about 10 minutes or until they are firm to the touch. Unwrap the foil to reveal perfectly spiced gingerbread logs with a smoky twist.

Campfire Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookies are a classic holiday treat that can easily be made over a campfire. Prepare your favorite sugar cookie dough and shape them into small rounds. Place the cookies on a cookie sheet lined with foil and bake them in the campfire or fire pit until golden brown. The slightly smoky flavor adds a unique twist to these traditional cookies.

Campfire Snickerdoodles

snickerdoodle

Snickerdoodles are a crowd-pleasing cookie, even better when made over a campfire. Roll your Snickerdoodle dough into balls and coat them with cinnamon and sugar. Place the cookies on a foil-lined cookie sheet and bake them in the campfire or fire pit until they are puffy and golden. Combining the warm cinnamon and the campfire’s smoky aroma will make these cookies irresistible.

Always exercise caution when cooking over a campfire, and ensure that you have adult supervision. If you’re considering a Coachmen RV Freedom Express Ultra Lite travel trailer, here are some tips to help you choose the right floor plan:

Consider Your Needs and Lifestyle

The first step in choosing the right floor plan is to consider your needs and lifestyle. Are you traveling alone or with a partner? Do you have children or pets? How often do you plan to use your RV? Answering these questions will help you determine the size and layout that will best suit your needs. For example, if you’re traveling with children, you might want a floor plan with bunk beds or a separate bedroom for added privacy.

Essential RV Tips for Winter Traveling: Stay Warm and Safe on the Road

Essential RV Tips for Winter Traveling: Stay Warm and Safe on the Road

Traveling in an RV during winter can be an exciting adventure, but it also presents some unique challenges. Whether you’re a seasoned RVer or a newbie hitting the road for the first time in winter, here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and comfortable journey.

winter road

1. Prepare Your RV

Before embarking on your winter adventure, it’s crucial to winterize your RV properly. This involves checking your insulation, sealing drafts, and ensuring all your heating systems are in good working order. Insulate the windows, doors, and vents to minimize heat loss, and consider investing in a skirt to surround the bottom of your RV to prevent cold air from entering.

2. Pack Appropriate Clothing and Bedding

Dressing in layers is critical to staying warm in an RV during winter. Pack thermal underwear, wool socks, hats, gloves, and insulated jackets to keep yourself cozy when venturing outside. Additionally, bring extra blankets, warm bedding, and a good-quality sleeping bag to guarantee a comfortable night’s sleep.

3. Be Mindful of Water Usage

Water management is crucial when traveling in winter. Drain your water tanks before hitting the road to avoid freezing pipes. Instead, rely on bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes. If you need running water in your RV, consider using an RV antifreeze to prevent freezing or invest in heated water hoses.

4. Monitor Propane Levels

Propane is essential for heating your RV, cooking, and providing hot water. Consequently, it’s crucial to keep an eye on your propane levels. Always travel with a full tank and carry an extra propane tank or two, particularly if you’re planning an extended trip. Regularly check for leaks and ensure your carbon monoxide and propane detectors are in working order.

5. Check Weather Conditions

Before embarking on your journey, check the weather forecast for your destination and along your route. Winter storms can be unpredictable, so it’s crucial to plan accordingly and be prepared to adjust your itinerary if needed. Avoid driving in hazardous conditions and stay updated on road closures and travel advisories.

6. Stay Warm and Insulated

Even with proper heating, an RV can still feel chilly in winter. Maximize your insulation efforts by adding weatherstripping to doors and windows and using thermal curtains to prevent heat loss. Invest in portable heaters and use electric blankets to keep yourself warm inside. However, make sure to follow all safety guidelines and precautions when using space heaters.

7. Plan Your Destinations and Activities

Consider destinations and activities that are suitable for winter travel. Research RV parks and campgrounds that offer full hookups and amenities like heated restrooms and laundry facilities. Look for winter-friendly activities such as skiing, snowboarding, or ice fishing to make the most of your winter RV adventure.

8. Practice Safe Driving

Driving an RV in winter conditions requires extra caution. Keep a safe distance from other vehicles, reduce speed, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration. Ensure your RV tires are in good condition and properly inflated for optimal traction. Consider investing in tire chains for added stability on icy roads.

Traveling in an RV during winter can be a fantastic experience, offering unique landscapes and a sense of solitude. By following these tips and staying prepared, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. So, bundle up, pack your essentials, and hit the road for an unforgettable winter RV adventure. Camping Recipe: Incredible Fish Stew

Camping Recipe: Incredible Fish Stew

If you’re looking for a delicious way to prepare your next catch of the day at the campground, don’t miss this amazing camping recipe. This fish stew is easy to make over your campfire and packed with flavor you’ll love. Get the full recipe below.

fish stew

Ingredients

Recipe adapted from one on SimplyRecipes.com

  • 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion
  • 3 large cloves garlic
  • 2/3 cup fresh parsley leaves
  • 2-3 fresh chopped tomatoes, around 1-1 ½ cups
  • 2 teaspoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup shellfish stock
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1 1/2 pounds fish fillets
  • Pinch dried oregano
  • Pinch dried thyme
  • 1/8 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. Wash and dry all of your produce.
  2. Chop the onion and mince the garlic cloves.
  3. Roughly chop your parsley leaves and finely chop the tomato.
  4. In a cast iron skillet, over your fire, heat a drizzle of olive oil and saute the onion until fragrant and translucent.
  5. Add in garlic and cook for another minute before topping with parsley. Cook for two minutes until everything is releasing those wonderful aromatics, and then add the tomatoes and tomato paste.
  6. Cook, stirring occasionally, on as indirect heat as possible for approximately 10 minutes.
  7. While the base cooks, clean and prepare your fish. If you are using a fish with firm meat, like cod or halibut, cut into two-inch pieces. If you’re using something with softer flesh, I recommend cooking the fillets whole in the stock.
  8. Once the base and cooked, add in the fish stock, white wine, and fish fillets.
  9. Bring the whole thing to a simmer until the fish is cooked. 3-5 minutes.
  10. Add in oregano, thyme, salt, pepper, and Tabasco to taste.
  11. This stew is great when served in bread bowls, but you can easily serve it over rice or with bowls.
